retail therapy
it was a busy busy weekend. rather exhausted.. meow.
was supposed to meet Liz, Ryan and Joshua for japanese dinner on Friday.
but had to wait for Dad for dinner so i decided not to join them anyway.
heard that Neil was there too.
nway for the enx 2 days i've been tagging around with Daddy wherever he went.
look, it's not that i wanted to go okay? Dad simply packed me along. sigh.
anyway, it was good fun hanging out with Dad =)
went to Chinatown for almond gruel dessert.
went Orchard to shop around and bought stuffs.
went cousin's house and got driven nuts by my nephew.
went to see cousin's new office.
spent good time with Daddy talking nonsense and mocking at passer-bys.
celebrated Grandma's birthday. quite a spread for dinner.
supposed to attend CHOICE gathering but it was scheduled at 4pm at Jurong West.
kinda far and was too rushed. oh well.. =/
freakonomics

don't buy this book. as much as it is revered by New York Times review, it's not worth its $29. thus whoever wanna read it can borrow from me. it looks at social problem such as crime, drugs and real estate from an economic perspective.

gotta catch up myself on Genesis 3. can't help it, she's going to Shanghai for ONE year!
the crab-stick with bacon and mushroom-chicken kebabs were good.
the lychee martini was potent. the rounds of Chivas-Green Tea were starters for a wild nite =)
then we all went off to Zouk.
entered Phuture first. Phuture would also be my favourite R&B place.
the music totally rocks your ass off! except that the club is way toooo smaaalll.... knn.
yep, danced drink and smoke. sin city lah! 3/4 pack of Dunhill. whoohoo!
more rounds of e-33 cider w grenadine syrup, rounds of apple-shooters and whisky orange.
the gang was damn high! ended up whacking the dance floor so hard so furious,
took lotsa photos which some i do not have at the moment.
really enjoyable fun company! thanks for everything people especially Huiling for org the party!

met Vincent for coffee at the new Spinelli's Uni. Hall yesterday. .
it was good seeing him.
chatted about work, studies, our dept, our research area, our lives, our family and our church.
it's alwiz good to talk to him. he's one of my closest advisers and a friend i respect.
alwiz offering a new perspective.
after which we were supposed to go back to office.
supposed to wait for the shuttle bus but since the weather was fine,
it wasn't hot, the rain had stopped, the breeze was cool and the trees were shady,
Vincent proposed that we take a stroll back to office together.
so off we went, a slow stroll across campus. it was lovely, calm and peaceful.
i'll miss him when he's away in Toronto. may God bless him with care alwiz. Amen.
there won't be anyone to discuss academic matters with, to trouble-shoot wrt statistics,
or maintain strength and sanity in a seemingly insane dept.
Vincent is a respectable tutor who teaches and offers guidance, a willingness to share
and encourage. very rarely you get advisers who bother about asking how work's been.
met Roopesh, Hung and Kin Hong on the bus on my way out of campus.
crazy TJCians. still as competitive as ever. they're in USP-Bio-Engin programme.
smart asses. hahah. already they're planning for internship and industrial attachment.
Gabriel asked Joanna teasingly to learn how to make mooncakes.
the nex thing Joanne did was to sign up for mooncake-making classes. so cute!
i pray that things go well between them.
by offering yourself and our spouse to God, be assured that the relationship would be fruitful.
together man and woman work as a team, each a special role in building His Kingdom.
we won't go to heaven alone, we go there together.
it's a busy week ahead. Dad's back from China so gotta spend lotsa time with him.
need attend a tentative family dinner to celeb Grandma's birthday.
gotta rush reports and submit a few documents.
gotta prep for school. Huiling's going to Shanghai for really long so wil hv to attend her Mambo.
Liz is leaving for Aust and Ryan for States so will have another gathering.
still got weekly bible study.. still need meet Don...
i'm cramped.
guess which is him?

hahah. tt's for you 'Uncle' Boon! go guess who's who if you are too free =P

vocational callings
it simply amazes me to see how God's plans for us unfolds...
there is this cousin i have whom i never spoke much to, seen less than 10 times in this 21 yrs.
due to family conflicts and hurt between siblings of the previous generation,
my immediate family keeps a clear distance from Cherie's family.
whatever i heard about Cherie was through my great-grandma. jus part of family gossip.
she's recently left for Perth to study. i didn't know that.
it was only at CHOICE Weekend i met this other girl called Ada.
she is the typical convent girl, talkative and cheerful but really sweet.
little known was Cherie her best friend! i only found that out through the sharing sessions!
the world is so small... a cousin i don't bother talking to, a girl in my group,
and she excitedly sms my cousin that i was at the same camp!
my cousin was so surprised!
from there, my cousin added me on msn and now we're catching up on the lost years..
God has a plan for us, for the things that happen in our lives, for every person we meet.
God has planned a purpose for every encounter.
right now, my cousin is also comtemplating conversion to Catholicism.
we come from a Methodist family. conversions were few and objected.
i am the third converted Catholic in this huge family despite objections.
by re-encountering my cousin after so many years of lapsing,
i know that God would have planned for me to stand by my cousin too,
get to know her and love her, walk with her and pray for her.
may His will be done. Amen!
during this CHOICE Weekend,
we did a series of workshops, presentations, sharing sessions, group-discussions etc..
we even had a religious sister from the Canossian order
and a few married working couples to share their experiences with us.
topics discussed were: communication skills, marriage, fidelity, family building, children as a blessing, role of man and woman, parenting, hurt and reconciliation and our vocation.
i can't tell you much about the retreat, not coz i cannot but it's the experience that's difficult to put into words. however, i do strongly encourage everyone to attend the CHOICE Weekend.
it's designed for a secular audience, both non-Catholics and Catholics.
tt's why i felt that there wasn't sufficient time for personal devotion, prayers and worship.
ermm.. they have a very calm and peaceful prayer room though.
during this camp, i also met old friends, made new friends and reaffirmed my faith.
i felt welcomed and accepted in the small family of the Catholic Students Society,
but i also came to embrace the big faith family i share universally with other Catholics.
there're alwiz people out there praying for us. Alleluiah! let us pray for others too!
i did argued with one of the presentor with regards to role of modern women.
she said that girls do not need to study too much, for honours and masters etc..
coz ultimately we will be married and have kids.
by taking the matrimonial vow and marriage as a blessed sacrament,
our vocation would be to love and care for our family, raising a fruitful and healthy family.
thus high academic achievements would be less relevant.
it is good to have a normal degree to ease employment, but not a paper chase.
i on the other hand, argued that if men can engage in paper chase, why not women?
coz we are both equally endowed in our intellectual capacities.
since it is a God-given talent, we should be fruitful and glorify God through our work!
especially in Singapore's society, without a good honours or masters degree,
it is increasingly difficult to gain employment or climb the corporate ladder.
the demands of the society places such worldly emphasis on academic performance.
however, being a Catholic,
i have accept joyfully the role God has planned for me and adhere to the teachings of the Church.
from another perspective, it's fine to have engage in paper chase and achievements,
but not at the expense of the family. i can work,
but my main concern should be providing care, love and understanding towards my family.
instead of buying branded stuff, the money can be better used for charity works.
instead of lazing at home, time should be dedicated to doing voluntary work to serve the needy.
if we neglect our family, our loved ones, and the disadvantaged of the community,
then that is being irresponsible to our callings and not being a fruitful Christian.

Genesis 2
last nite's Bible study was rather good.
Fr Greg patiently went verse-for-verse with us, starting with the Book of Genesis.
and Fr Greg is quite funny, telling jokes while teaching the Bible to liven up the class.
i am poorly schooled in the Old Testament (and the New one too... )
thus this weekly Bible study class is really helpful =)
for those interested, it's every Wed 8pm-10pm at OLPS (Siglap Hill) Main Church.
please bring own Bible and writing set.
it's an elementary class, nothing has hardcore as Alpha course. so no worries!
the class is made of people of all ages. most were above 40 yrs old. some were working adults.
we were the few youths gathered. learning has no age limitations for it is a life long journey.
humble yourself before the Lord in His house and may the Holy Spirit come upon you. Amen!
Boon! how dare you ask me for bribes! ahh.. thinking of possessing my Tiffany ring somemore!
so gonna make sure i wreck your stage next time i see you! heehee.
but thanks for everything! i will remember our crappy moment =)
yep, we protect our close friends from the strangers who inflict hurt. cheers!
His miracles
i thank God for blessing me with a wonderfully loving Grandma.
not only does she take care of my daily needs while i work and study,
not only does she take on the burden on household chores at age 70,
she showers me with love, kindness and trust.
with the coming of RCIA in September (tentatively),
sweet Grandma gave me a white gold necklace for my crystal-studded cross,
all for hopes that i will pass my RCIA smoothly.
was telling her about Bible study class which i wil attend this evening.
she was like "good. make sure you practice Christian living at home and at school.
do not take your Lord's name in vain".
for an atheist to proclaim such a statement, i am very surprised and thankful.
my Lord has not let me down.
she also said that she will persuade my Dad regarding my religious preference.
good things will happen in God's time. i have faith that my Dad will bow down to Christ in respect.
certainly for many of us, the works we did in this life will only bear fruits after our death.
CHOICE
listening to Mersmerize by JaRule featuring Ashanti while i work.
R&B jus makes everything better while it's raining heavily out there.
for all those interested in this weekend's CHOICE weekend camp,
please visit www.choice.org.sg.
i assure you that it is very helpful in improving your interpersonal communication skills.
for those signing up, please meet at CHOICE retreat hostel this Friday 7.30pm.
pay $30 to the Catholic Student Society person-in-charge there.
yes, i will be going so see you there!
thank you for always cheering me on and feeling happy for my rite to confirmation.
i hope i have proven a worthy sister in faith, may we walk this road together will the end.
i am joyously looking forward to the Christ's glorious return.
may we prepare ourselves well to receive the Lord of our lives where He reigns forever and ever. Amen!
amused
it's raining outside. it's cold and wet.
the skies are grey and i am listening to Andy Hui's cantonese love songs.
perfect... =p
i feel amused by my sheer stupidity.
i haven't stopped telling myself
"veen, your curiousity can get you killed one day"
i can't stop laughing either. don't ask me why.
i am so amused by the world and what people say.
no, kids don't say the darnest things. it's actually adults who let out their own secrets.
i found someone who can't cover his tracks better than me.
i know i won't be the only one killed by honesty. thank God no disaster occured (i hope)
but i do know now that good honest guys exist.

Michael's dream
met Don for dinner at the Soup Restaurant Suntec last nite.
he finally successfully got himself transferred from customs duties to trade (FTA) enforcement.
his new post is only 5m away from his old cubicle but with a way nicer warmer boss.
sometimes it's the boss so is so anal that makes u wanna throw in the towel after 3mths.
c'mon.. his immediate boss had the lowest staff retention rate. 5 recruits in 2.5yrs. wow...
thank God for the blessings and Don, welcome back to church after lapsing for a good 10 years!
he was so sweet! i only casually mentioned that i wanted Paulo Coelho's Eleven Minutes and Malcolm Gladwell's Blink which is a sequel to The Tipping Point but coz they were expensive,
i decided against buying them. he bought them for me. ouch =)
had 2 dark malt beers anda few cigs.
feels damn self-appreciative to self-destruct after prolonged mental hypertension.
came home and zzz at 3am. woah. knocked out til 11am.
one of the most energizing sleeps i ever had in a very long while.
a total crash into my bed, without ever to stare at the white ceiling.
but how could sleep be without dreams?
so i had dreams, rather ridiculous ones at that too =P
i dreamt that i bought a new phone (which i need one in reality).
i bought the same motorola cell that Liz has. the flat clam-shell one with high photo resolution.
i got the silver one and was happily snapping photos with it.
then i met Michael with my new phone. jus happened to bump into him on the streets.
(for all those who do not know Michael, he is my sec sch tuition teacher's eldest son, who was frm RI GEP, RJC, NUS Engin and a DSTA scholar who is 4 yrs older than me.
no, i do not have pictures of Michael. but he's damn cute lah! very athletic person.)
Michael took me out on a spin in his car since i was free, he was free and the weather was superb. we took lotsa pictures of everything and ourselves, we chat alot and had ice cream.
it was a wonderful day (in my dream) to catch up with an old friend.
if this event happened in reality, i would have had a thoroughly enjoyable day =)
i used to literally bunk at Michael's home during sec sch,
have dinner with his family but i hardly talked to him. he only chat with me when his Dad's not ard.
then we would play PS together when i finished my homework and my tutor was out at the market.
but upon completing sec 4, i hardly went back to visit them except to visit his parents.
and he won't home either =/
so in my dream, i dreamt i caught up with an very old friend and had a very fun day.
then i asked his younger brother Kenneth if Michael was attached and he told me 'yes' so okay.. that's nice. (i do not know in reality if Michael's attached. i don't even have his number)
after which i found myself amidst an army exercise in a coconut plantation. *rolls eyes*
it was a battle between EOD space-suit wearing, rubber pellet shotting guys versus babes in green uniform. yes, lean mean babes in their low-cut, tapered-at-the-waist Number 4s.
i can't remember which side was i on but likely on the girl's team
coz someone shot rubber pellets at me. reminds me of paint-ball...!!!
nway, the babes all had green-greyish eyeshadow on, smooth foundation, blusher and practically looks like SAF ARMY poster girls!
i asked them why eye-shadow when it's an exercise?
they replied that they wanna look pretty whenever wherever. good answer!
then my phone rang and i woke up.
i can understand why i dreamt of Michael, the new phone and a spin in his car.
but i think the part about army, exercise, combat battle and green uniform has to be accredited to Ryan and Liz for the happy chat they had at Happy Daze last nite.
smth about skimmed milk, army, SAFOS Scholar, grades and outfield exercises...
it's that whole army part being condensed into my head!!! eerie!!!
coz Liz was saying how she wished she joined the army and wondered if she will survived through the toughness it demanded. ok, so that girl with eye-shadow would likely be her. opps.
yes, i think ladies should be dressed up and pretty for all occasions regardless of circumstances!
ok, enough of army talk and funny dreams. time to work!
ranty rants
i am getting old.
i have been ranting quite a bit lately. hahah!
sorry for sending rants to the 2 of you over sms today.
you know who you are *winks*
thanks for the venting- outlet, i jus need a listening ear =)
you're much appreciated!
i am okay generally, jus stressed to meet deadlines which is tis Thurs.
(which is just one of the many deadlines. hahahah!)
need to contact people, interview them, send them proposals...
then pray damn hard that they reply me. many organizations are way too aloof.
which like in the case of CHC, it has been a week and no avail.
i better call them to press them and pray harder. urgh.
coz if CHC and TOUCH doesn't reply me by thurs or 26th July,
then 1) i have no observations and conclusive results to hand in on Thurs when i submit my report. that spells S-H-I-T. someone's gonna be really upset with my work.
then 2) i will have nothing constructive to present when i submit my comprehensive and edited academic paper by 30th July for review!
i'm expected to make a short presentation before other accomplished scholars and Govt. officials at this year's inter-religious dialogue in Sept..
i don't want to go there and have nothing critical to say, coz that will bring a bad name to IPS.
many scholars have also taken time off specially to attend the dialogue =/
many people think my job is damn relaxed. why?
coz it's flexible there is so much free time i can enjoy basking in the sun.
GET REAL!!! i am not paid well for no reason! trade off man!
amidst the difficulties faced during my internship, i'll like to thank God and praise Him for my lovingly understanding and supportive family, especially my father who has been the critical examiner of my works; my church mates who have alwiz walked with and prayed for me; my friends who hug me when i feel lonely; and my demanding yet supportive dept.
Glory to be God forever. all things are not possible without His divine blessings.
May Christ shine as the perfect role model of our lives in this volatile and complicated world.
back to work it is for now =)
weekended
watched Fantastic 4 on Fri nite after work.
pretty funny show with puny lines.
Jessica Alba is HOT!!!
yes, especially in her F4 uniform.
go watch it! totally comical!
unfortunately there was fiery tension before, during and after the movie.
*yawn*
Sat nite met up with my most beloved Mensa Clique.
once again, let me clarify that thisw Mensa is not the high IQ agency.
it's an AJC Orientation 1 group. our group =)
had Shanghainese dinner at Marine Sq. hope Mich enjoyed her brithday surprise!
hey babe, u never take photo of your birthday present in its little maroon box!
it was lovely to meet up with the gang after so long. so much to catch up abt n crap abt =p
all of you make miserably mundane life better =) thank you for everything! i love you!
hmmm... i don't have pictures of Mich and the birthday cake though.. =(
after which went down to Velvet with Ryan, Liz, Josh, Niel and Ben.
the music was superb, the crowd was beautiful and star-studded, the drinks were potent.
unfortunately we had to leave early at 2.30am. such a spoiler.... bah
i have this mantra: study hard, play harder.
thus when i club at Velvet assuming that the 3 above fun-forming factors are present,
i will club till 4am aka closure time. whoopee work out session!
Phuture's Nu-Beats were energizers =) woohoo!
i came home at 4am but only managed to sleep at 6am. wtf.
yes, i do hv a serious sleeping problem... damn. time to go on zzz pills...
Sunday wasn't anything too exciting, neither did i receive much rest.
went to Church in the evening, it's Bible Sunday.
then had dinner at Da Paolo's Pizza Bar at Holland Village.
their pizza is superbly satisfying, throw in a portobello mushroom flan and fried calamari rings.
finish off with a tiramisu and coffee. to die for dinner sofas they have.
too bad i didn't bring camera or there'll be so many lovely pictures to show!
then met Ryan and Liz after their Jap dinner+movie date for coffee at StarBucks.
they watched War of The Worlds which received a cock-story feedback,
though the animation was superb.
Liz was dressed in simple white top with a pretty navy blue skirt.
while out dear mad army man (Ryan) was *as usual* in shirt and berms. hahah!
thank God he didn't turn up in basketball jersey and shorts =p
then again, clothes's don't make a man. what matters is the quality of the substance in him.
today's a brand new day of a brand new week.
time to work harder, work faster, write more critically and sleep well at nite.
i am currently suffering from sore worn-out eyes which ache... ouch.
talked to Vincent today. yep, ran into some minor difficulties in my research.
he's busy reading stuff and preparing for his PhD thesis.
i am happy for him. hope he takes good care of his health.
last time i saw him at meeting, he was totally exhausted.
better catch him soon before he leaves in mid-Aug.
Dear Vincent, thank you so much for all your warm encouragement.
i am indeed blessed to have you as my supervising tutor,
although your teaching days with me was only for a semester.
i stil remember you wearing the same old clothes week after week,
that the class thought you had only 5 pieces of clothes in your wardrobe.
we were so mischievious despite our age, alwiz teasing you in class.
and often than not, we complained that your tutorials were boring and dull.
but you never gave up on us, advising us on module content, study methods and exam revisions.
you never failed to bring a glimpse of hope and support when i am at my downest point.
thank you for guiding me as a wonderful role model. i enjoyed working alongside with you.
may God bless you richly.

ok, that's the all of us. Veen, Pris, Elaine, Choon, Muck and Jon (Mich's boyfriend) and in the center, Mich and her MNG bday cake frm Bengawan Solo. it was a wonderful evening. i am looking forward to celebrating Pris's birthday (let's hope she remembers to invite us that is). ohh.. does anyone think that Elaine n Choon looks compatible?

back
hello readers!
i'm back! ain't you gonna gimme a big warm fuzzy hug?
met Liz for tea today. got several other things done too.
finally had an off-day from work. fruitful it was.
Liz gave me a very good question to think about.
"since we know that all material possessions are all but temporal, and greater rewards lie in heaven. then why do we still want out Gucci bags and Ferregamo shoes? when u buy one, you'll want more"
well.. what i think is, work smart and work hard to buy what you want. but just buy one every season. you deserve it =) however, do contribute time and energy to doing God's work by engaging oneself in church activity, prayer groups, or volunteering at homes to bring joy to others. it's a delicate balance =)

closure
due to unforeseen circumstances,
i've decided to close down this blog entry for the time being.
i'll only be back when the time is ripe for me to write something sensible.
i realize that i have nothing intellectually critical to write anymore,
and diplomatic writing is writer's hypocrisy.
thanks for being with me and reading my entries for the past 1 year.
